This book explores several cultural and historical paths
intertwined in the genesis and development of sport and physical
activities within colonial and postcolonial contexts. As far as
youth organizations and Western-based sports are concerned, the
Independencies political split needs to be reconsidered, from a
cultural perspective with practices overlapping spatial,
chronological and epistemological borders. When looking at the
variety of practices, the colonial legacies and the ensuing
migration journeys through a global perspective, there is a need to
understand the diverse ways of composing and building the
postcolonial sport worlds. Multiculturalism (South Africa, France,
Algeria), transnational journeys (Pacific Islands), rebuilding of
national identities through sporting institutions (Ireland, West
Africa), racialization of the society (Rwanda, South Africa),
gender control (from the West-East to the North-South gap),
sportization of traditional/old games (Americas), and so on.
Following the various studies shaping this book, the ambivalence of
sporting and physical activities' paths comes up. It is apparent
these trajectories have generated a mixed feeling of adhesion and
repulsion towards Western hegemonies in postcolonial societies.
The growth of entrepreneurship research has been accompanied by an
increased convergence and institutionalization of the field. In
many ways this is of course positive, but it also represents how
the field has become "mainstream" with the concomitant risk that
individual scholars become embedded in a culture and incentive
system that emphasizes and rewards incremental research questions,
while reducing the incentives for scholars to conduct challenging
research. This book challenges this status quo from accepted
theories, methodologies and paradigmatic assumptions, to the
relevance (or lack of) for contemporary practice and the impact of
key journals on scholars' directions in entrepreneurship research.
An invited selection of the younger generation of scholars within
the field of entrepreneurship research adopt a critical and
constructive posture on what has been achieved in entrepreneurship
research, the main assumptions which underly it, but also open-up
new paths for creative entrepreneurship research in the future.
This is a must-read for all scholars, educators and advanced
students in entrepreneurship research.
Entrepreneurship is a growing field of research, attracting
researchers from many different disciplines including economics,
sociology, psychology, and management. The concept of
entrepreneurship, and research in the field, is becoming
institutionalized, increasingly oriented by influential trends,
theories and methods, following the mainstream and being shaped
accordingly. The objective of this book is to move beyond
mainstream approaches and assumptions which are dominating the
field, and to raise questions about the nature and process of
entrepreneurship research. Over twelve chapters, leading
international thinkers in the field debate the impact and the
consequences of institutionalization. Taking key research
orientations including multidisciplinarity, international
entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, and ethics, it takes a
critical and constructive and sometimes controversial posture and
encourages a re-examination of the way we look at the social and
economic phenomenon of entrepreneurship. This book is vital reading
for entrepreneurship researchers and educators, advanced students
and policy-makers in Entrepreneurship, Economics, Sociology and
Psychology.
Civic engagement in this book is understood to include attendance
at booked National Health Service appointments; compulsory
attendance at school; the take-up of a variety of State benefits in
cash and kind, such as Pension Credit and free school meals; and
attendance at work. The book is the outcome of a collaborative
exercise, in which specialists in a variety of disciplines have
come together to better understand the state of civic engagement in
the fields of health, education, social security and employment.
Their research is drawn primarily from the British experience, but
the phenomena studied are international in scope. Generally, civic
engagement has been improving, but in certain areas there are
serious gaps that still need addressing. Administrative
arrangements are shown to reduce absence for booked appointments,
without necessarily making referred patients more or less likely to
attend. A variety of measures are suggested for truancy, and the
take-up of social security benefits faces a number of issues. Work
absence attributed to sickness is at least partly viewed as a
psychosocial problem. Economic analysis shows the importance of
incentives, and the potential cost of changing from selective to
the universal provision of free school meals. Taken together, the
sociological analysis in the book highlights the fragmentation of
society and its consequences for civic engagement. This book was
originally published as a special issue of Contemporary Social
Science.
